Arc of the Testimony
John 5:40
The term fourfold witness is used in two distinct
ways by Christian groups. “The fourfold
witness
of Scripture” is often a reference to the
four separate
but related accounts of the ministry of
Christ in the Bible
These “witnesses”
consist of the first four books of the
New Testament—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Together, these four gospels serve as a
fourfold witness
of the earthly ministry and character of
Jesus Christ
Others speak of a “fourfold witness” in
regard to four distinct lines
of evidence that support the
truth
of Jesus as the Messiah.
John 5:30–47 provides the basis for this perspective.
The first line of evidence in the fourfold
witness is John the Baptist,
whose ministry was to
prepare the way for the Messiah.
said,
"You have sent to John and he has
testified to the truth”
(John 5:33).
The second line of evidence in the fourfold witness is the
works Jesus performed.
Jesus points to this line of evidence Himself:
"I have testimony
weightier than that of John.
For the works that the Father has
given me to finish--
the very works that I am doing--
testify that the Father has sent me”
(John 5:36).
These works consisted of teachings, healings, and miracles Jesus performed during His earthly ministry.
All of those works proclaimed
the fact of who Jesus is
The third line of evidence in the fourfold
witness is the
witness of God the Father
After pointing to His miracles, Jesus says,
"And the Father who sent me has
himself testified concerning me”
(John 5:37).
This could be a reference to the voice from heaven at
Jesus’ baptism
(Matthew 3:17)
or to a divine conviction in people’s hearts.
The fourth line of evidence in the fourfold witness is the Old Testament Scriptures: “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5:39–40). Jesus’ opponents were experts in the Law of Moses and were thoroughly trained regarding the many prophecies of the coming Messiah. Yet they did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah. This is why Jesus concludes His response to the Jewish leaders with these words: “Do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to
believe what I say
(John 5:45–47).
In Jewish culture, only two witnesses
were required to provide adequate testimony
during a trial.
Jesus provided four witnesses for Himself—double the
required amount.
Further, His witnesses included
God the Father and the Word of God,
the two highest
forms of authority possible.
The powerful testimony
concerning Jesus clearly showed His true identity,
despite the fact that
He was rejected by the Jewish leaders.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judaism’s
holiest days. Meaning
“Head of the year” or “First of the year,”
the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the
seventh month
of the Hebrew calendar, which
FALLS
during September or October
Rosh Hashanah commemorates
the Creation of the world
and Marks
The
beginning of the Days of Awe,
a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the
two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.
Rosh Hashanah is the
Birthday of the Universe,
the day
God
Created Adam and Eve,
and it’s celebrated as the head of
the Jewish year.
It begins at sundown on the eve of Tishrei 1
(Sept. 15, 2023)
and ends after nightfall on Tishrei 2
(Sept. 17, 2023).
The central observance of Rosh Hashanah is blowing the shofar (ram’s horn) on both mornings of the holiday (except on Shabbat), which is normally done in synagogue as part of the day’s services.
Rosh Hashanah feasts traditionally include round challah bread
(studded with raisins) and
Apples dipped in Honey,
as well as other foods that symbolize our wishes for a sweet year
Other Rosh Hashanah observances include
candle lighting in the evenings
and
desisting from creative work.
Together with Yom Kippur (which follows 10 days later),
it is part of the Yamim Nora'im (Days of Awe, or High Holidays)
God has chosen the number 40
to help emphasize times of trouble and
hardship.

ETHAMe'-tham
('etham; Othom,
Exodus 13:20; Bouthan, Numbers 33:6, 7; in 33:8
the Septuagint has a different reading,
"in their wilderness"
showing another pointing for the word):
The name used to be explained as the Coptic Atium,
"border of the Sea"
(Gesenius, Lexicon, under the word) which would agree with the Hebrew (Numbers 33:8) where the
"wilderness of Etham"
is noticed instead of that of Shur (Exodus 15:22)
East of the Red Sea (see SHUR).
At Etham (Exodus 13:20)
, the Hebrews camped in the "edge," or at
"the end,"
of the desert West of the sea that they were to cross
(see EXODUS).
This camp was probably near the North end of the
Bitter Lakes,
a march from Succoth. Brugsch (Hist. Egypt, II, 359) would compare Etham with the Egyptian Khetam ("fort"), but the Hebrew word has no guttural. The word Khetam is not the name of a place (see Pierret, Vocab. hieroglyph., 453), and more than one such "fort" seems to be noticed (see PITHOM). In the reign of Seti II a scribe's report
mentions the pursuit of two servants,
apparently from Zoan, to the fortress of I-k-u southward, reaching Khetam
on the 3rd day;
but if this was the "Khetam of Rameses II," or even that "of Minepthah," it would
not apparently suit the position of Etham.
This is the season that Moses sent the 12 scouts
on a 40-day journey
to investigate the land God promised the
Israelites as an inheritance.
The scouts were to bring back a report, so the Israelites
could prepare themselves
before going in to take possession of the Promise Land.
This occurred during mid-June to mid- July
on today’s calendar which is the 4th month on
the Biblical Calendar; the Hebrew name for
the 4th month is Tammuz.
This mission extended into part the
5th month named Av.
“Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying, ‘Send out for yourself
(shelach lecha – שְׁלַח-לְך)
men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan
which I am going to give to the sons of Israel;
you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes,
a leader from each tribe.” (Numbers 13:1–2)
The scouts were in the land for 40 days.
We find the details in Numbers13.
There are many lessons in this account of
biblical history
but today I want to use it to
discuss the number “40”.
Forty days later, they returned
from reconnoitering
(making a military observation of a region).)
the land and went to Moshe, Aharon and the entire community of the people of Isra’el at Kadesh in the Pa’ran Desert,
where they brought back word
to them and to the entire community and showed them
the fruit of the land.
(Numbers 13:25-29)
According to BibleStudy.org the number is mentioned at least 146 times in Scripture,
The number 40
generally symbolizes a period of testing,
trial or probation.
During Moses’ life he lived forty years in Egypt and
forty years
in
the desert before God selected him to
lead his people out of slavery
and
finally led the children of Israel in the
wilderness
for
40 years as anew nation
- Moses was also on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights, on two separate occasions (Exodus 24:18, 34:1 – 28), receiving God’s laws.
- Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant — the Ten Commandments.” (Exodus 34:28)
- He also sent spies, for forty days, to investigate the land God promised the Israelites as an inheritance (Numbers 13:25, 14:34).
- The prophet Jonah powerfully warned ancient Nineveh, for forty days, that its destruction would come because of its many sins.
- The prophet Ezekiel laid on His right side for 40 days to symbolize Judah’s sins (Ezekiel 4:6).
40 is significant in the Bible as it is
the number of
testing, preparation and leadership,
as well as the
harbinger of something new.
Perhaps the most famous
“40”
is the Great Flood that wiped out mankind except for
Noah and his family on the ark.
It rained for 40 days and nights
before the waters stopped.
Then God gave the earth and humanity
Anew beginning
(Genesis 7:4)
- Goliath challenged the Israelites twice a day for 40 days before David defeated him, which began a great following by the people.
- (1 Samuel 17:16)
- Yeshua was tested by the devil in the wilderness for 40 days before He began His public ministry.“Then Yeshua was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, ‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’” (Matthew 4:1–3)
- The period from the Resurrection of Yeshua to His ascension was 40 days, a period of preparing the disciples for the work that lay ahead.
(Acts 1:3)
I’ve found some much-needed encouragement in the familiar
story of David and Goliath.
I’ve realized this story has a lot to say about
dealing with fear by
the power of God.
But I always skipped to the happy ending
and never really considered the context.
These days, I think I can say, I have really
appreciated the whole story.
Before the victory came
there was taunting, -a lot of taunting.
Before David won the epic battle, 1 Samuel 17:16 tells us
there were 40 days of loud taunting by Goliath.
Every morning and every evening he would
shout out his challenge
to King Saul and the army of Israel,
no doubt sending icy chills down their spines like morbid
clockwork.
The very real threat of death and
slavery
was staring them in the face.
The stakes couldn’t have
been
higher for them
There is a pattern of the
number 40 in the scriptures, and each demonstrates
The glory and power of GOD
When Joseph was a young man, he was employed by Mary's father in the work of building an addition to his house, and it was… when Mary brought Joseph a cup of water, during a noontime meal … the courtship of the pair who were destined to become the
parents of Jesus really began.
Joseph and Mary were married, in accordance with Jewish custom, at
Mary's home in the environs of Nazareth
when Joseph was twenty-one years old. This marriage concluded a normal courtship of almost two years' duration. Shortly thereafter they moved into their new home in Nazareth , which had been built by Joseph with the assistance of two of his brothers. In this home, especially prepared, these young and expectant parents had thought to welcome the child of promise, little realizing that this momentous event of a universe was to transpire while they would be absent from home in Bethlehem of Judea.
(122:6.2) The home of Joseph and Mary was a one-room stone structure with a flat roof and an adjoining building for housing the animals. The furniture consisted of a low stone table, earthenware and stone dishes and pots, a loom, a lampstand, several small stools, and mats for sleeping on the stone floor. In the back yard, near the animal annex, was the shelter which covered the oven and the mill for grinding grain. It required two persons to operate this type of mill, one to grind and another to feed the grain. As a small boy
Jesus often fed grain to this mill while his mother turned the grinder.
The tabernacle in the wilderness probably had a flat roof:
- The outside curtains (Exodus 26:8) were 30 cubits long, the precise length required to offer a flat roof and to extend down either side as a top for the gold-plated board walls. A gable roof would increase the length of covering required for the roof and similarly decrease the remaining length available for covering the sides. More or less of the lower portion of the gold-plated boards would thus be left exposed. But gold was otherwise reserved for the interior of the structure. The fact that the inner curtain was two cubits shorter than the outer three which covered it points that the outer curtains were made to protect it, and that they perhaps reached almost to the floor.
- No ridgepole is recorded, nor is the use of one implied. In addition, there is nothing to show that the five “pillars” varied in length.
- No record is made of any methods of covering triangular gable ends, and it would be highly doubtful that the ends were left exposed. It should be noted that the veil which divided the holy place from the most holy did not spread to the top of the building, so that light from the Shekinah might be partly seen above it from the first apartment of the sanctuary.
- The tabernacle was a impermanent, movable construction designed for use during the wilderness wanderings, until the erection of a more permanent building in the Holy Land. The insignificant amount of rainfall in the dry, wilderness would not make a flat roof a problem.
time of Joseph and Mary’s betrothal, the consummation of their marriage, and the birth of Jesus: Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-56; Luke 2:1-7. Each passage reveals something about their relationship as well as the
cultural mores of that time.
In Bible times, Jewish marriage customs regarding a couple’s engagement were far different and much more stringent than those we are familiar with today, especially in the West. Marriages were arranged by the parents of the bride and groom and often without even consulting the couple to be married. A contract was prepared in which the groom’s parents paid a bride price. Such a contract was immediately deemed binding, with the couple considered married even though the actual ceremony and consummation of the marriage would not occur for as long as a year afterwards. The time between was a sort of testing of fidelity with the couple having little, if any, contact with each other.
It was during this betrothal period that the angel Gabriel visited Mary and told her of her impending pregnancy. It’s no small wonder that Mary was so inquisitive of the angel; she was still a virgin and would know no man sexually for several months, maybe as long as a year or more
(Matthew 1:18; Luke 1:34).
Joseph soon became aware of Mary’s pregnancy, and this no doubt was cause for consternation on his part: “Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly” (Matthew 1:19). Jewish custom allowed that they be considered as husband and wife, though the marriage had not yet been consummated. The point is being made that Joseph and Mary had experienced no sexual contact with each other, as verse 18 “before they came together” points out. So, Joseph was in a quandary. Jewish law provided that his betrothed, because of her unfaithfulness, could be placed before the elders for judgment and stoned to death. But he was thinking to just put her away quietly without public knowledge. Betrothals or marriage engagements in those ancient times were binding and could only be terminated by an official divorce decree.
It was then that the angel appeared to Joseph in a dream (Matthew 1:20-25) and explained to him that all this was bringing about the fulfillment of prophecy that a virgin would bear a child who was to be the Savior (Isaiah 7:14), and “he [Joseph] did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”
Luke 2:1-7 also confirms the idea that Joseph and Mary, though betrothed, were considered as husband and wife by Jewish customs even though the actual marriage ceremony had not been fully effectuated.
So, Joseph and Mary were actually legally married before
the birth of Jesus though their marriage was
not consummated physically until after His birth.

The Tribulation Saints
Revelation 7:1–17Revelation chapter 7 opens with the phrase,
“And after these things” indicating that John was about to
receive anew vision
This vision is an interlude between the
sixth and seventh seals
and does not advance the chronology of Revelation.
The interlude could easily be omitted without any interruption in the progression of the seals being opened, but inclusion of this chapter is extremely important. It provides details surrounding the sealing of Jewish believers, as well as
the salvation, slaughter, and heavenly
service of Gentile believers
mentioned in the
fifth seal
(6:9–11).
Preparation Before Sealing
Before the sealing of Jewish believers, John saw “four angels” positioned
on the “four corners [major points on the compass] of the earth”
They were sent to restrain the “four winds” (agents of God’s judgment)
struggling to blow their destructive fury over the earth
John beheld a fifth angel
ascending from the east, having
the
seal of the living God
Scholars have tried to identify this angel
as Christ, the Holy Spirit,
an archangel, or some
specially prepared
messenger from God
On an exalted mission
to seal
the 144,000 messianic Jews
The fifth angel commanded the other four angels in a loud voice,
“Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have
sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads”
Times of the Gentiles
The angel’s loud cry indicated the importance and
urgency of his command to
hold back judgment until the servants of God
were sealed.
The seal is the name of God the Father written on their foreheads. No reason is provided for this sealing. Most likely it is to protect them from death by the Antichrist’s persecution and natural disaster during the Great Tribulation. This is validated by their appearance with Christ on Mount Zion after His return to earth
People Sealed
God will use the 144,000 Jewish believers to preach throughout the world during the Tribulation.John recorded the number sealed as “an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel” (v. 4). John did not see the sealing, but “heard” (v. 4) that the number was 144,000 (12,000 from each tribe of Israel), which should be interpreted literally.
The term Israel must refer to the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The fact that the 12 tribes are singled out during the Tribulation indicates that this is speaking of a literal, physical Israel. Although there are 12 tribes listed in verses 5 through 8, some substitutions have been made. For example, Dan is eliminated and Levi is added to the list, while Ephraim is replaced by Joseph. Many reasons have been given for the substitutions, but space will not allow investigation of the various positions in this article. However, most scholars believe that Dan and Ephraim were omitted because of their continual promotion of idolatry in Israel (1 Ki. 12:28–30). Later it will be shown that God will use the 144,000 Jewish believers to preach throughout the world during the Tribulation. For this reason, many scholars believe God has chosen to substitute the idolatrous tribes of Dan and Ephraim with Levi and Joseph.
Some have asked how the identity of the 12 tribes can be confirmed, since the genealogical records were destroyed when the Romans invaded Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
While it is true that mankind is unable to identity who belongs to which tribes, God knows, and
He is responsible for this sealing.
Persecution of the Saints
The words “After this” used again in verse 9 indicate that
John received a second vision
in chapter 7.
He saw a “great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and peoples, and tongues… before the throne, and before the Lamb” (v. 9). Who is this multitude of people? They are not the 144,000 mentioned earlier.
The first group is exclusively Jewish, whereas this new multitude is a mixture of Gentile and Jewish believers. This group is a vast multitude that became believers during the Tribulation, many of whom died violent deaths.
How did they become believers? It could not have been through the witness of the church. There is no indication that the church is on earth during the seven-year period of the Tribulation. In fact, one of the “elders” (v. 13), representing the church in heaven, asked, “Who are these who are arrayed in white robes? And from where did they come?” (v. 13). Scripture makes it clear that the
“gospel of the kingdom shall be preached
in all the world
for a witness unto all nations;
and then shall the end come”
(Mt. 24:14).
This preaching is not done during the church age but in the seven-year Tribulation period
(Mt. 24:21).
These people heard the message in one of three ways.
First, God’s two witnesses “shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days [during the first three and one-half years of the Tribulation]” (11:3).
Second, an angel “having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people” (14:6) will fly above the earth proclaiming his message.
Third, it is possible that the “sheep people” (saved Gentiles), who come to the Lord during the Tribulation, will do so through the witness of Jewish people (the 144,000) who are scattered worldwide because of persecution by the Antichrist.
These saved Gentiles will have housed, clothed, fed, visited in prison, and provided medical care to the Lord’s brethren (Jews) during the Tribulation (Mt. 25:31, 35–40)
and will have heard of their salvation.
The elder answered his own question:
“These are they who came out of the
great tribulation
[continually keep coming out], and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (v. 14).
They became believers in Christ and were made
spiritually pure through His blood.
…a great multitude of those who come to the Lord will
be martyred for their faith
during the Great Tribulation.
As shown above, a great multitude of those who come to the Lord will be martyred for their faith during the Great Tribulation. First, they are pictured standing “before the throne, and before the Lamb” (v. 9) in heaven. Second, their attire provides information about their status.
They are “clothed with white robes” (v. 9), the
attire of the redeemed,
symbolic of the righteousness and holiness of God.
Third, they are holding “palms in their hands” (v. 9), symbolic
of peace, joy, and victory.
Fourth, they will sing the song of salvation, “saying,
Salvation to our God
who sitteth upon the throne,
and unto the Lamb”
The song of salvation
indicates deliverance from sin through
the blood of the Lamb
for those who do not accept the mark of the beast
or worship his image (14:9–12) during the
Tribulation.
The phrase “cried with a loud voice” (v. 10) means these believers continually cried, without stopping, praising the Father and the Son for the great salvation they had experienced. This prompted “the angels… round about the throne” (v. 11) to fall on their faces before God and worship Him. Although the angels do not experience salvation, they desire to know about it (1 Pet. 1:12) and rejoice over one sinner who repents (Lk. 15:10). Once again they offered up a sevenfold doxology, similar to the one expressed earlier:
“Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might be unto our God forever and ever. Amen”
Let us return to the elder’s question: “Who are these who are arrayed in white robes? And from where did they come?” (v. 13). John answered, “Sir, thou knowest” (v. 14). In other words, John informed the elder that he could not identify the group. It may seem strange that John could not identify them, but upon reflection, it is not difficult to understand his lack of insight. The location of the group is in heaven, making its identification difficult. John was projected into the time of the Great Tribulation, of which he had little or no understanding. The number of people was vast, making discernment among them impossible. Their different racial and national backgrounds must have been confusing to the apostle. Any or all of these reasons could have prevented John from identifying these people.
Apparently John needed more information concerning the elder’s question. The elder responded by answering, “These are they who came out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (v. 14). They were martyred for their faith during the Great Tribulation.
Perpetual Service
The Tribulation saints are pictured standing before “the throne of God and serv[ing] him day and night in his temple” (v. 15). The type of service they offer is not indicated, but the word serve means to perform worshipful service. Thus, they perform a priestly service connected with offering prayer and praise to God. Their service is carried out continually in the Temple of God, “day and night” (v. 15). Because heaven has no day or night, some interpret this as a reference to the Millennial Temple (Ezek. 40–44) on earth during the Kingdom age. This is a weak interpretation, offering no textual proof. The phrase day and night is an idiomatic expression used to indicate that they continually serve in God’s Temple without the physical limitations experienced by priests on earth.
Christ, who is standing in the midst of the throne…
will shepherd these saints in heaven,
supplying and satisfying all their spiritual needs.
These saints enjoy three provisions from God. First, they receive protection from the Lord: “he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them” (v. 15). The protection and fellowship are in contrast to what they experienced during the Great Tribulation.
Second, earthly privation is replaced with heavenly provision:
“They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the
sun light on them, nor any heat” (v. 16).
The privations they were forced to endure during the Great Tribulation will be eliminated (cp. Mt. 25:42–43). “The Lamb who is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters” (v. 17).
Christ, who is standing in the midst of the throne
(between God the Father and the saints),
will shepherd these saints in heaven, supplying and
satisfying all their spiritual needs.
Third, past sorrows will be replaced with eternal serenity: “and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes” (v. 17). There is no hint that this refers to sorrow in heaven over the loss of opportunity to serve the Lord on earth. These tears will be shed by the saints who suffered trials and tribulation for the sake of their faith in Christ during the Great Tribulation.
There will be no tears for the saints in eternity (21:4).
Many will succumb to the deluded lies of the Antichrist and give him total allegiance
during the Tribulation.
At the same time, one of the greatest revivals in history will ensue when multitudes of Jews and Gentiles throughout the world receive Christ.
We know that the struggles of the tribulation saints the satanic onslaughts of the Antichrist will be replaced by the Shepherd of their souls, who will wipe away every tear of sorrow and meet all their spiritual needs. What a picture of God’s divine grace and mercy in the midst of His wrath and judgment!

Tabernacle Holy Spirit Dwelling
'A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and wailed aloud in pain as she labored to give birth. Then another sign appeared in the sky; it was a huge red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on its heads were seven diadems. Its tail swept away a third of the stars in the sky and hurled them down to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. She gave birth to a son, a male child, destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and his throne. The woman herself fled into the desert where she had a place prepared by God, that there she might be taken care of for twelve hundred and sixty days. Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. But woe to you, earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you in great fury, for he knows he has but a short time.”

A Messianic Seal from the Christian church in ancient Jerusalem has been
rediscovered after 2000 years.
This ancient symbol was found on Mount Zion.
