"And Jeremiah said,
'The word of the LORD came to me, saying,
"Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is
coming to you, saying,
'Buy for yourself my field which is at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it'"' (Jer 32:6-7).
About a hundred years ago a
few people were crazy enough to invest their resources
in endless piles of useless sand along the Mediterranean sea shore.
I wonder if they were able to look at those sand dunes back then and envision the dozens and dozens of skyscrapers of Tel Aviv today. I don't know.
But God obviously did!
No less crazy than purchasing a seemingly worthless field,
God also calls us to invest in people who, from a purely logical and psychological perspective,
are not worth the painful sacrifice of our precious time and
hard-earned resources.
Why would God ask us to do such a thing?
Because he did!
The God of crazy investments used his most precious resource
(his beloved Son) to purchase
thieves, liars, perverts, and cheaters,
knowing full-well the sand dunes of their sinful living
would become skyscrapers of spiritual prosperity.
May we never say "no" to the crazy opportunities
God gives us to invest in improbable people and/or impossible places,
since we have put our trust in the
"God who gives life to the dead and
calls into being that which does not exist"
(Rom 4:17).
