I am a worm and not a man....
Many bulls have surrounded me; strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me. They open wide their mouth at me, as a ravening and a roaring lion.... For dogs have surrounded me.... I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You." (Ps 22:1, 6, 12-13, 16, 22).
Though I'm not drawn to the violence of boxing, I have always loved boxing movies that tell the story of an underdog who, contrary to all expectations, defeats a much larger foe. Perhaps it's stories like these that inspire me to continue the fight when Satan keeps whispering in my ear to throw in the towel. When it comes to underdog stories, Psalm 22 is at the top of the list!
A very lonely man becomes a worm to triumph over strong bulls, roaring lions, and growling dogs so that worms like me can become his brother! Jesus defeated our greatest enemy with both hands tied behind his back - or to be more accurate, hands and feet nailed to a cross! The gospel is God's pledge to underdogs that no matter how brutal the individual battles, the war against Satan and his evil forces is already won! "But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord"
(Rom 8:37-39).
