"Now it came about in
those days,
when Moses had
grown up,
that he went out to his brethren and
looked on
their hard labors;
and he saw an
Egyptian
beating a Hebrew,
one
of his brethren.
So he looked this way and that, and
when he saw there was no one,
he struck down the
Egyptian and hid him in the sand"
(Exod 2:12).
I used to think that Moses looked in
all directions
because he didn't want to be caught.
But the only other time the phrase
"and when he saw there was no one"
is used in the
Hebrew Bible,
it
refers to God,
who obviously can't
be accused of
trying to avoid being caught.
In Isaiah 59:16,
God looks around for someone
to step up
and confront terrible injustice.
But when he doesn't find anyone,
he takes matters into his own hands
(Isa 59:16-17)
And this sense makes the
most sense of Moses' actions in
Exodus 2.
Moses was not being sneaky.
Rather, we
find a Moses
in this passage who desperately
looks in all directions
for someone to do something,
but
who still hasn’t learned to
look up!
As we
Witness the Incarnation
of
evil, injustice,
and human barbarism, we
look in all
directions for help
And we are Grateful Beyond
WORDS
for all the
Amazing soldiers and civilians
who,
without hesitation,
RUN directly into the FACE of danger
We are also grateful
for all the
support of the United States,
and for the
Christians from around
the world
who give
so self-sacrificially
But let us also remember that
one Moses
witnessed the defeat
of all the armies of Egypt when
he discovered the supernatural
power of looking up!
"A Song of Ascents
I will lift up
my eyes to the mountains;
from where
shall my help come?
My help comes from
the LORD,
who made heaven and earth"
(Ps 121:1-2).
"Some boast in
chariots and some in horses,
But we will
boast
In the Name
of the
LORD, OUR God"
(Ps 20:7).
