Paul and Revelation: Building the unified, multi-ethnic church

  1. The biblical world was multi-ethnic, and numerous different ethnic groups, including Black Africans, were involved in God’s unfolding plan of redemption.
  2. All people are created in the image of God, and therefore all races and ethnic groups have the same equal status and equal unique value.
  3. Inter-ethnic marriages are sanctioned by Scripture when they are within the faith.
  4. The gospel demands that we carry compassion and the message of Christ across ethnic lines.
  5. The NT teaches that as Christians we are all unified together “in Christ,” regardless of our differing ethnicities. Furthermore, our primary concept of self-identity should not be our ethnicity, but our membership as part of the body and family of Christ.  
  6. The picture of God’s people at the climax of history depicts a multi-ethnic congregation from every tribe, language, people, and nation, all gathered together in worship around God’s throne.


At the center of Paul’s theology is the doctrine of justification by faith. That is, believers are forgiven their sins and are justified before God by the grace of God through faith in Christ. Yet Paul also develops the consequential and practical outworking of this doctrine. Since we all come before God based on what Christ has done for us rather than what we have done, then we are all equal before him. Paul stresses this in passages such as Galatians 3:28, “There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female; you are all one in Christ Jesus.” The slightest notion of ethnic superiority is a denial of the theological reality of justification.

Furthermore, Paul’s emphasis is not just on equality, but on unity. Thus in Colossians 3:11 he writes, “Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.” Likewise in Ephesians 2:14-16 Paul stresses that in Christ groups that were formerly hostile (like the Jews and Gentiles) are now brought together in unity in one body.

Paul is not just commending toleration of other ethnic groups in the Church, he is teaching complete unity and common identity among the groups. He proclaims that we are all members of the same family, parts of the same body. Once we have been saved by faith and brought into Christ, then our perception of our self-identity must change, leading to a radical shift in thinking about other groups of people within the faith as well. Our primary identity now lies in the fact that we are Christians, part of Christ and his kingdom. This overshadows and overrides all other identities. Thus the primary identity for us, whether we are White Christians or Black Christians (or Asian or Latin American, etc.) is that we are Christian (“in Christ”).

​This should dominate our thinking and our self-identity. We should now view ourselves as more closely related to Christians from other ethnicities than we are to non-Christians of our own ethnicity. We don’t just tolerate each other or “accept” each other; we realize that we are connected together into one entity as kinfolk, brothers and sisters of the same family, united and on equal footing before God, and only because of what God has done for us. This does not obliterate the reality of skin color or cultural differences. What it changes is where we look for our primary self-identity. Our ethnic distinctions should shrink to insignificance in light of our new identity of being “in Christ” and part of his family.

This unity is brought to a climax in the Book of Revelation. Central to the climactic consummation presented in Revelation is the gathering of multi-ethnic groups around the throne of Christ. Revelation 5:9 introduces this theme by proclaiming that Christ has redeemed people “from every tribe and language and people and nation.” This fourfold grouping (tribe, language, people, nation) occurs seven times in Revelation (5:9; 7:9; 10:11; 11:9; 13:7; 14:6; 17:15). In the symbolic world within the Book of Revelation the number four represents the world while the number seven represents completion. Thus the seven-fold use of this four element phrase is an emphatic indication that all peoples and ethnicities are included in the final gathering of God’s redeemed people around his throne to sing his praises.

So what is lawful? “Gods law? or Mans?”

The curious who SOUGHT Jesus had their whole WORLD turned UPSIDE DOWN. In parable after parable in the first ten chapters of Mark, Jesus “CHALLENGED their thinking” and traditions as he MINISTERED. Now he’s changing up what he’s done EVEN MORE by -RIDING into JERUSALEM- in PEACE as “KING,” and causing a SCENE clearing out the treachery in the temple courts. To begin these “LAST few days” of his life in Jerusalem, Jesus SPEAKS publicly with authority, on a -few important topics- “amazing ALL who listen.” The first story is about a vineyard and the tenants. It’s a retelling of Isaiah 5, the same imagery: God the Father, Israel the tenants, the prophets rejected or killed. Jesus was “abandoned” and rejected by his people. And when he quotes Psalm 118 for the punchline, his adversary know of what he’s accusing them. So when they were “mocking” jesus, they were really mocking GOD. They thought they were “contending man” but were “contending god.”

Have you not read this Scripture: “‘The STONE that the builders rejected has become the CORNERSTONE; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” Mark 12:10-11. Our JOURNEY with Jesus with the DISCIPLE Mark has piqued curiosity. Why did Mark pick these CERTAIN stories about Jesus? What about the -order- he put them in? What about the symbolism from the Hebrew scripture (OT)? Jesus makes states that he is the cornerstone from Psalm 118. The stone is a familiar image for God (Deut. 32:4, Psalm 18:31, Isaiah 17:10, 26:4, 20:29) and particularly how it points to the *Messiah* (Isaiah 28:16, Daniel 2:34-35,45, Acts 4:11, Eph 2:20). Jesus made it clear to the Jewish leaders (the builders) they had rejected him, and he became to “them a *stone of *stumbling” (Isaiah 8:14). The “cornerstone is laid first” at the “head corner” and “governs every other corner” and “every ANGLE” in the entire building and thus determines the “place every other stone is to be laid.” Through his death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus became the “chief cornerstone of the SPIRITUAL TEMPLE,” the church. As ACTS 2:36 says: “God has made Him BOTH Lord and Christ.” There is salvation in no one else. It is “GODS DOING,” and it is marvelous!! 

We can SEEK him, there are still more points of history and etymology of -THE WORD- and idea of the cornerstone. Jesus is the chief cornerstone, ingrafting all humanity into ONE SPIRIT, one life in him, who is, the TREE of LIFE. Our God resurrected life from death, ressurecting eternal life in us- in unity as one human race and one human family. We are saved by Grace through Faith in him, because he forgave us for our sins by replacing our sins in his place through sacraficing himself on the cross. Sins past, present, and future. This was only achieved through his unconditional Love, GRACE, and unconditional forgiveness that he offers his children- asking we do the same in RETURN. This is his renewed COVENANT.

Redemption and RESTORATION is not possible by human strength alone, it is by the GRACE of GOD. There is no security in anything else but abandonment to God, no matter what storm is swirling about. So, when we hear the expression “The stone that the builder’s rejected has become the cornerstone,” and that it was “Jesus Himself who was rejected and set aside” – and thus gave us the grace of the death and resurrection - we too can realize that in the struggles and mysteries of our life, God is doing something new and something great. He uses human adversity and suffering for greater purpose, that point to him, calling us to seek him. We wants to RESTORE, and only he can. God uses suffering to bring us closer to him. Sometimes we dont understand the things we do, but god fully understands. His word reveals truth, his word points us in his direction, his spirit SPEAKS through us. 

Psalm 34 is the 34th book of psalms: “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth." The Book of Psalms is part of the third section of the Hebrew Bible, and a book of the Christian Old Testament. In the slightly different numbering system used in the Greek Septuagint and Latin Vulgate translations of the Bible, this psalm is Psalm 33. In Latin, it is known as "Benedicam Dominum in omni tempore". Psalm 34 is attributed to David. The Psalm's subtitle, A Psalm of David when he pretended madness before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed, derives from when David was living with the Philistines, but the account of this event in 1 Samuel 21 refers to the king as Achish, not Abimelech. The psalm is an acrostic poem in the Hebrew Alphabet, one of a series of songs of thanksgiving. It is the first Psalm which describes angels as guardians of the righteous.

Psalm 34;

2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

3 O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

7 The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

9 O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

22 The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

The phrase the law and the prophets refers to the entire Hebrew Bible, what we call the Old Testament. Jesus spoke of “the law and the prophets” multiple times, such as when He listed the two greatest commandments (Matthew 22:40). In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus pointed to His absolute perfection, saying, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (*Matthew 5:17*)

On the Emmaus Road, Jesus taught two disciples “everything written about himself in the Scriptures, beginning with the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets” (Luke 24:27, CEV). Clearly, all Scripture, indicated by “the law and the prophets,” pointed to Jesus. The same passage also contains a three-fold division of the Old Testament: “the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms” (verse 44), but the two-fold division of “the law and the prophets” was also customary (Matthew 7:12; Acts 13:15; 24:14; Romans 3:21).

The books of the law, properly speaking, would comprise the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The prophets, in the two-fold division, would include the rest of the Old Testament. Although it may seem strange that poetic books such as Job or Proverbs would be included in the “prophets” category, it was common for the Jews to see any writer of Scripture as a prophet. Further, many of the psalms are -clear- “messianic prophecies.”  It is believed that the forked cross represents a tree, or more precisely, the “Tree of Knowledge,” which brought sin into the world. However sin was defeated by the suffering of Jesus on the cross at Calvary. Jerusalem was still being rebuilt following the destruction caused by Titus in 70 AD. Emperor Hadrian had built during the 130s a temple to Venus over the supposed site of Jesus' tomb near Calvary, and renamed the city Aelia Capitolina.

When Philip invited his friend Nathanael to meet Jesus, he referred to the whole of Hebrew Scripture in its two-fold division: “We have -found- the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about—Jesus of Nazareth” (John 1:45, NET). Philip was right that all of Scripture has a common theme: the Messiah, the Son of God, who is Jesus.

That is very “Amazing news!!” God is -real- and personal, and hes searching for all people he doesnt have a relationship with, and Hes asking for you to -search for him- back! The “good news” is hes not “confined or defined” by religion, belief, culture, identity, race, etc, as there are no -man made restrictions- or boundaries in God! I know it sounds odd- how god -‘reveals himself,’ but he just does, and when he does its just -‘known.’ Thats why for the past 2,000 years people keep proclaiming the ‘same -discovery.’ Part of the reason why i refused to -accept- it for so long was because -i know- theres thousands of years of history and persecution -keeping the distance. And that is a huge -barrier to ‘Cross. His disciples are called to ‘testify- to the -truth- and -witness- of the messiah,’ and we are called to -share- that good news! “Amazing news!”

But the god of israel is the god of jacob, and jacob was given the name israel after “wrestling with god.” (etymologized as "contends-with-God"). In the Genesis narrative, Jacob spent the night alone on a riverside during his journey back to Canaan. He encounters a "man" who proceeds to wrestle with him until daybreak. In the end, Jacob is given the name "Israel" and blessed, while the "man" refuses to give his own name. Jacob then names the -place- where they -wrestled- Penuel (פְּנוּאֵל "face of God" or "facing God"- The account contains several plays on Hebrew names—Peniel (or Penuel), Israel—as well as similarity to the root of Jacob's name (which sounds like the Hebrew for "heel") and its compound. The limping of Jacob (Yaʿaqob ), may mirror the name of the river, Jabbok (Yabbok יַבֹּק , river), and Nahmanides (Deut. 2:10 of Jeshurun) gives the etymology for the name Jacob. The Hebrew text states that it is a "man" (אִישׁ, LXX ἄνθρωπος, Vulgate vir) with whom Jacob wrestles, but later this —“man" is identified with “God”—- (Elohim) by Jacob. Much of history points to the symbolism behind why israels name was given.

The covenants;

​The covenant concept is central of Scripture, establishing and defining God’s relationship with mankind in every *age of *history. The OT was established between God and the people of Israel after Freeing them from Egyptian slavery. Moses, leading them from captivity- served as mediator of this contract at Mount Sinai: (“Moses took the blood from the basins- splattered it over the people, declaring, “this blood confirms the covenant the Lord has made with you in giving you these instructions.(Exodus 24:8, NLT)” God promised Israel would be his chosen people, and he would be their God: (“I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt(Exodus 6:7,)” God issued the Ten Commandments and laws in Leviticus to be obeyed- If they complied, he pledged prosperity and protection in the Promised Land). To address sins, God set up a system of “animal blood sacrifices.” That system lasted hundreds of years, but it was only temporary. Out of love, God sent his only Son, Jesus, into the world; This new covenant would resolve -the #fall- once and *for *all (Isaiah). For 3 years, Jesus taught throughout Israel about the kingdom of God and his -upcoming role- as #Messiah. To support his claim as Son of God, he performed many miracles, even raising people from the dead. By dying on the cross, Christ became #Lamb of God, the #ultimate #perfect #sacrifice, whose blood has the -power- to #redeem us #forever. Jesus freely #intercedes for us before God- We now -encounter God- ourselves; no longer needing a human to speak for us. Israel struggles to find closeness with God, but the gospel illustrates the covenant now through the power of Christ’s divine blood- sacrificial love- in -manifested- spirit through his *word. While God's grace frequently broke through in the OT, its #presence manifests in #spirit through the resurrected #living christ- The free gift of redemption in Christ is available to all who choose to #receive it. Israels restoration is in the-unity with christ #messiah- in the promise land- eternal #dwelling place.

Redemption...

Everyone is in need of redemption. Our natural condition was characterized by guilt: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Christ’s redemption has freed us from guilt, being “justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).


The benefits of redemption include eternal life (Revelation 5:9-10), forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), righteousness (Romans 5:17), freedom from the law’s curse (Galatians 3:13), adoption into God’s family (Galatians 4:5), deliverance from sin’s bondage (Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 1:14-18), peace with God (Colossians 1:18-20), and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). To be redeemed, then, is to be forgiven, holy, justified, free, adopted, and reconciled. See also Psalm 130:7-8; Luke 2:38; and Acts 20:28.

The word redeem means “to buy out.” The term was used specifically in reference to the purchase of a slave’s freedom. The application of this term to Christ’s death on the cross is quite telling. If we are “redeemed,” then our prior condition was one of slavery. God has purchased our freedom, and we are no longer in bondage to sin or to the Old Testament law. This metaphorical use of “redemption” is the teaching of Galatians 3:13 and 4:5.

Related to the Christian concept of redemption is the word ransom. Jesus paid the price for our release from sin and its punishment (Matthew 20:28; 1 Timothy 2:6). His death was in exchange for our life. In fact, Scripture is quite clear that redemption is only possible “through His blood,” that is, by His death (Colossians 1:14).

The streets of heaven will be filled with former captives who, through no merit of their own, find themselves redeemed, forgiven, and free. Slaves to sin have become saints. No wonder we will sing a new song—a song of praise to the Redeemer who was slain (Revelation 5:9). We were slaves to sin, condemned to eternal separation from God. Jesus paid the price to redeem us, resulting in our freedom from slavery to sin and our rescue from the eternal consequences of that sin.

Numbers 32:23 says, “Be sure your sin will find you out” (KJV). This is a curious-sounding caution, especially if read in isolation. So we’ll review its context, especially the entire chapter of Numbers 32, then see what else the Bible has to say on the topic of our sin being “found out.”

The statement “be sure your sin will find you out” is set in the completion of the exodus of Israel from Egypt. After wandering in the wilderness for 40 years, the tribes of Israel were finally preparing to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land. Military-aged men from all twelve tribes were required to help each tribe conquer its assigned territory, a task that would involve much time and hardship.

Before the Israelites crossed over the Jordan, the tribes of Gad and Reuben let it be known that they liked it right where they were, east of the Jordan. The land there was ideal for raising cattle (Numbers 32:1), and the leaders of those tribes approached Moses for permission to settle on the east side, rather than in Canaan. Moses at first said “no”: “Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here?” (verse 6). He then accused them of failing to desire to enter the Promised Land, as the previous generation had done: “This is what your fathers did” (verse 8). And he reminded them that it was this very sin that caused the Lord’s anger to burn against them for 40 years, and he warned them that they risked bringing destruction on the whole nation all over again (verses 13–15).

But Gad and Reuben had a different intention, as they explained. They asked Moses if they could leave their flocks and families behind in settlements while the men armed themselves and went to war in Canaan. After their assurances that they were not abandoning their fellow Israelites, Moses agreed to their request. He told them they must fight until the land was subdued, and only then could they return to their property east of the Jordan. Moses then added the warning: “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23).

When Moses said, “Be sure your sin will find you out,” he did not mean, “Everyone will find out about your sin.” If the trans-Jordan tribes failed to keep their promise, it would be a sin against the Lord and the whole nation, and their sin would be obvious to all. Rather, Moses’ warning that they could be sure their sin will find them out hints at the strange-but-true nature of sin.

In several places in the Bible, sin is described in terms that make it seem as if it were a living being with a mind and will of its own. God poetically warns Cain that “sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it” (Genesis 4:7). James explains how, figuratively speaking, people “are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (James 1:14–15). Paul, in Romans 7:14–25, describes sin as though it were a being living within him, enslaving him against his will and making him do what he himself hates and condemns: “It is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it” (verse 20).

In the statement “be sure your sin will find you out” is revealed the mystery of sin. The nature of sin is such that, whether or not others discover your sin, your sin will “discover you.” You cannot run from the consequences. Sin carries within itself the power to pay the sinner back, and sin’s payback is hell. Don’t even think about toying with sin. It cannot be tamed, outrun, or shaken off. No matter how safe you think you are, if you are a sinner, your sin will find you out.

Moses’ warning to the tribes of Israel, “be sure your sin will find you out,” is echoed by Paul: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life” (Galatians 6:7–8). The only way to escape sin’s consequences is to be forgiven of your sin by faith in the death and resurrection of Christ (Romans 10:9; 1 John 2:2; Revelation 1:5).

​“Classical Jewish texts depict a Messiah who will come to REDEEM the Jewish people, gather the exiled to the land of Israel, and rule over a PROSPEROUS nation, and relate other more detailed (and diverse) traditions about the Messiah’s arrival as well as the conditions of the messianic era.  [The prophet] Elijah [who is supposed to usher in the messianic age- oneforisrael] Many rabbis believed that the Messiah would arrive suddenly on the “eve of Passover, the first redemption, which serves as a model of the final redemption” [Mekilta de-Rabbi Ishmael, Pischa 14]. (Redemption is the first ressurection of Yeshua- (2,000 years ago- which israel rejected (or more fairly just “missed”-most actual jews during that time had no idea the resurrection ever happened- it was the religious leadership or gatekeepers during that small window of time- so for 2,000 years jews had no idea- which was what god had called israel to do- he put a veil over israel until the fullness of the gentiles (bride of christ) came in to conclude his ultimate redemption)- yeshua brought in the gentiles and is circling back to Israel- so the first and last resurrection is the ultimate redemption for Israel aligned exactly with passover 2022). Corruption and Degradation Will Precede Redemption. One statement from the time of the rabbis describes the era leading up to the Messiah in the darkest terms of societal corruption 😬

“In the footsteps of the Messiah, arrogance [chutzpah] will increase; prices will rise; grapes will be abundant but wine will be costly; the government will turn into heresy; and there will be no reproach. The meeting place [of scholars] will become a bordello (בֵּית בֹּשֶׁת; brothel), the Galilee will be destroyed (galilee sea is where Yeshua walked on water); the highland will lie desolate; the border people will wander from city to city and none will show them compassion; the wisdom of authors will stink (decline of universities and media); sin‑fearing people will be detested (christians); truth will be missing (everywhere basically); young men will humiliate the elderly; the elderly will stand while the young sit; sons will revile their fathers; daughters will strike their mothers, brides will strike their mothers‑in‑law; and a man’s enemies will take over his house. The face of the generation is like the face of a dog! Sons have no shame in front of their fathers; and on whom can one depend? Only upon our father in heaven [Sotah 9:15].” This era will be characterized by God’s war against Gog and Magog (current geography Russia- mass exodus) and other catastrophic events. Another statement, which may date from the time of the Hadrianic persecutions (132‑35 C.E.), offers the dark assessment that the Messiah will arrive in a period when Jews collaborate with their enemies (this is funny because jews are collaborating with christians 😂 but more importantly ARABS), Torah learning disappears (secularism), poverty increases (SOON), and religious despair deepens:

“The son of David will not arrive until informers are everywhere. (Yeshuas prophets- the guiding light☀️ he is “the way, the truth, and the life”) Another view: Until there are few students left. Another view: Until the last coin is gone from the pocket. Another view: Until peo­ple despair of redemption…as if there is no support or help for Israel [BT Sanhedrin 97a].” Gog and magog is the current location of russia and ukraine. 

the NT explains there will be significant christian persecution. 

Some sages predicted that the Messiah would not arrive until Israel observed the commandments more fully (correct 👏🏻👏🏻)

“Rabbi Judah said in the name of Rav: If all Israel had observed the very first Sabbath, no nation or tongue would have ever ruled over her…Rabbi Yohanan said, following Rabbi Simeon bar Yohai: Were Israel to observe two Sabbaths punctiliously, they would be redeemed immediately [BT Shabbat 118b].”

Some rabbis believed that the arrival of the Messiah had no relation either to political and societal events or to individual actions (it certainly does!). They believed that there were a finite number of souls destined to enter the world and reside within human bodies (pretty sure this is the holy spirit). When the supply of fresh souls was exhausted, the Messiah would arrive [BT Yevamot 62a; BT Avodah Zarah 5a; BT Niddah 13b] […]   [this is the 144k sealed that the new testament explains]

Converting to Judaism in the Messianic Age
A central question that preoccupied the rabbis was how the messianic age would differ from the present age. (The christian judiasm that is 😆)

One concern was that many Gentiles would convert to Judaism at the last moment just in order to participate in the new age. Some sages concluded, therefore, that “converts are not received in the days of the Messiah,” just as they were not welcome in the days of David and Solomon [BT Yevamot 24b].  (When this says judiasm its refering to present day christianity which is still Judaism, “full”- all law is fulfilled in the law and prophets). 

A dispute arose among the rabbinic sages about the desirability of encouraging Gentiles to convert to Judaism. While most welcomed converts, others raised doubts about their sincerity. Rabbi Helbo, who mistrusted the sincerity of converts, stated that “converts are more difficult for Israel than a sore [BT Niddah 13b].” Others suspected that converts might not remain loyal during the messianic era. They decided that converts could be accepted, but with difficulty because they were likely to revert to their former ways in the heat of the messianic upheavals [BT Avodah Zarah 3b].

Some rabbis faced the messianic age with anticipation, others with dread (that is what redemption is- suffering and then redemption or deliverance). One viewpoint suggested that knowledge of Torah would continue to decline in the messianic age: “A bad announcement was conveyed to Israel at that moment. In the future, the Torah will be forgotten [Mekilta de-Rabbi Ishmael, Pischa 12].” Others forecast that in “the future era, the synagogues and academies of Babylonia will be transported to the Land of Israel [BT Megillah 29a].” (One for israel). 

Many sages believed that the messianic age would be a time of wonders (ressurecting wonders INDEED) There were controversies about the nature of the messianic era (wars and rumars of wars) Followers of the sage Samuel maintained that it would be similar to their own era, except that the Jewish people would be returned to Israel and the Davidic monarchy restored. Samuel saw “no difference between this world and the messianic age other than subjugation to dispersions [BT Shabbat 63a].”
(I beg to differ ☺️) 

Others, such as Rabbi Eliezer, believed that the next era would be unprecedented and qualitatively different (TRUE). This debate represented the two poles of Jewish belief about the messianic era. One view sees it in terms of normal human existence under conditions of Jewish political independence (Israel becoming a State- also recent peace treaty brought to you by your favorite president); the other as something “—-wholly new that defies prediction.—“ (YEP). 

During the messianic era, the Messiah will reign victorious and rebuild the Temple. (Correct) He will restore the priesthood to the Temple, and the traditional sacrifices will be reinstated. (Correct- sacrificial Yeshua) The return to the golden age of the Jewish people will be complete (that is- zion- unity with the HOlY SPIRIT 👏🏻) Many popular Jewish prayers express this messianic longing for the rebuilding of the Temple and above all for the return to Zion. Perhaps even more than the coming of the Messiah, traditional Judaism has sought this dream of the return to Zion. (This is a spiritual restoration) The Jewish people will be complete (thank you jesus 🙌). Why did Jesus say that He was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel (Matthew 15:24)?

Jesus was in the area of Tyre and Sidon, a coastal region in extreme northeastern Galilee (Matthew 15:21) when a Canaanite woman came to Him with a request to heal her demon-possessed daughter. For a while, Jesus did not respond to the woman’s entreaties, and she followed Him and continued to beg for mercy. Finally, the disciples, feeling that the woman was a nuisance, asked Jesus to send her away. Then Jesus said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24).

We should understand Jesus’ words here not as an outright rejection of the Gentiles—moments later, He heals the woman’s daughter (Matthew 15:28)—but as a fulfillment of prophecy, a setting of priorities, and a test of the woman’s faith.

In Jeremiah 50:6, God calls Israel His people and “lost sheep.” The Messiah, spoken of throughout the Old Testament, was seen as the one who would gather these “lost sheep” (Ezekiel 34:23-24; Micah 5:4-5). When Jesus presented Himself as a shepherd to Israel, He was claiming to be the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy (Mark 6:34, 14:27; John 10:11-16; see also Hebrews 13:20; 1 Peter 5:4; and Revelation 7:17).

Jesus’ words to the Canaanite woman also show an awareness of Israel’s place in God’s plan of salvation. God revealed through Moses that the children of Israel were “a holy people to the LORD . . . chosen . . . a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth” (Deuteronomy 7:6). It was through the Jews that God issued His Law, preserved His Word, and sent His Son. This is why, elsewhere, Jesus tells a Samaritan that “salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22). In Matthew 15, when the Jewish Messiah says that He was sent to “the house of Israel,” He is simply connecting His presence with God’s purpose in Old Testament history. Christ was “born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law” (Galatians 4:4-5).

Every ministry must have priorities, and Christ’s ministry was no exception. When Jesus sent His disciples to preach the good news of the kingdom, He expressly told them, “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 10:5-6). Jesus did not forbid their preaching to all Gentiles; He did, however, narrow their focus to the areas which should be most receptive—those who knew the Law and were expecting the Messiah. Paul, in his missionary journeys, followed the same priority of preaching to the Jews first (Romans 1:16).

Finally, Jesus’ words to the Canaanite woman served as a test of her faith. She came to Jesus believing that He was the “Lord,” the “Son of David,” and the giver of mercy (Matthew 15:22). His delayed answer and seemingly exclusionary statement brought from her a further, passionate, public expression of her faith in His unlimited power (Matthew 15:27).

This act of compassion and healing of a Gentile is a beautiful picture of Christ’s ministry to the whole world—the Jewish Messiah is also the Savior of all who will believe (Matthew 28:19; John 10:16; Acts 10:34-36; Revelation 5:9).

New age Jesus, verses the TRUE Jesus

The expression “New Age” came into existence in the 1970s and 1980s. It was promoted by the circulation of the New Age Journal and a book by Mark Satin called New Age Politics. Marilyn Ferguson’s best-selling Aquarian Conspiracy was a presentation of the social agenda and philosophical vision of the New Age. Ferguson’s writing attained status as the unofficial scripture of the movement. As Russell Chandler, a writer for the Los Angeles Times, wrote in Understanding the New Age, “If Ferguson wrote the New Age ‘Bible,‘ Shirley MacLaine is its high priestess.”

Shirley MacLaine’s book, Out on a Limb, chronicles her reluctant conversion to New Age belief. This book describes her travels and studies, which include science fiction-like dimensions, out-of-body travel, contact with extraterrestrial beings, “trance channeling” (séances), and a “guided tour” of the unseen world. MacLaine’s second book, Dancing in the Light, tells about her reach into the world of yoga, reincarnation, crystal power, Hindu mantras, and past-life recall experiences mediated through acupuncture. Her spirit guides informed her that each individual is God, and she passed along the “wisdom” that the person is unlimited. One only has to realize it (Chandler, page 6-2).

New Age thinking has its roots, then, in Eastern mysticism, which attempts to bypass the mind. There is a new organ of perception—the third eye—which gives spiritual light. One needs to get to the “psychic self” by training one’s self to ignore messages from the mind or to see that the mind is actually achieving “cosmic consciousness.” The mind can create reality. 

Neil Anderson in his book, Walking Through the Darkness, writes this: “The New Age movement is not seen as a religion but a new way to think and understand reality. It’s very attractive to the natural man who has become disillusioned with organized religion and Western rationalism. He desires spiritual reality but doesn’t want to give up materialism, deal with his moral problems, or come under authority” (page 22). Anderson goes on to summarize New Age thinking (pages 22–24) as follows:

(1) It is monism. The belief that all is one and one is all. History is not the story of humanity’s fall into sin and its restoration by God’s saving grace. Rather, it is humanity’s fall into ignorance and the gradual ascent into enlightenment.

(2) All is God. If all is one, including God, then one must conclude that all is God. It is pantheism—trees, snails, books, and people are all of one divine essence. A personal God who has revealed Himself in the Bible and in Jesus Christ is completely rejected. Since God is impersonal, the New Ager doesn’t have to serve Him. God is an “it,” not a “He.”

(3) There is a change in consciousness. If we are God, we need to know we are God. We must become cosmically conscious, enlightened, or attuned to the cosmic consciousness. Some who reach this enlightened status will claim to be “born again”—a counterfeit of biblical conversion. The essential is not whether we believe or meditate, but whom we believe in and what we meditate upon. Christ is the true, personal, objective reality, as He said that He is the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).

(4) A cosmic evolutionary optimism is taught. There is a New Age coming. There will be a new world order, a new world government. New Age thinkers believe that there will eventually be a progressive unification of world consciousness. This, according to the Bible, is a counterfeit kingdom led by Satan himself. Christ has the true kingdom, and He will one day rule on earth with peace for all who accept Him as Savior and King (Revelation 5:13).

(5) New Agers create their own reality. They believe they can create reality by what they believe, and, by changing what they believe, they can change reality. All moral boundaries have been erased. There are no absolutes because there is no distinction between good and evil. Nothing has reality until one says that it is reality or says that it is truth. If finite man can create truth, we are in desperate trouble in our society. Unless there are eternal absolutes from the eternal God, man will eventually be his own destruction.

(6) New Agers make contact with the kingdom of darkness. Calling a medium a “channeler” and a demon a “spirit guide” has not changed the reality of what they are. This is the kingdom of darkness of which Satan is the head. Those involved in this kind of activity are in contact with a world that is totally opposed to the biblical God revealed to us in Jesus Christ, who defeated Satan (Matthew 4:1–11; Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14–18).

The New Age movement is a counterfeit philosophy that appeals to the feelings of individuals, leading them to think that that they are God and can enhance their lives through their own person. The reality is that we are born, grow up, live a while on planet Earth, and die. Humans are finite. We can never be God. We need someone greater than we who can provide us forgiveness and life eternal. Praise the Lord for the God-man, Jesus Christ. Through His death and bodily resurrection, He has won for us what we desperately need: forgiveness from God, a life of purpose and meaning in this life, and eternal life beyond the grave. Don’t miss out on who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for you. Read John chapter 3. Ask Christ to be your Savior. Your life will be transformed, and you will know who you are, why you are here, and where you are going.

​Jesus of the Bible is NOT the Jesus of the new spiritualities: The various new spiritualities, including the New Age Movement (NAM), have sought to completely reinvent Jesus, making him into their own Eastern image. They distort and deny the truth about Jesus as found especially in the four Gospels, and make him into yet another spiritual leader or guru.

In much of New Age and Eastern thought our problem is not moral so much as one of false understandings. We simply do not realise that we are already part of the divine. Liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and rebirth (samsara) comes by overcoming our false consciousness and merging with the oneness that we are a part of.


Thus Jesus did not really come to die for our sins, but to simply show us the way, like so many other great spiritual teachers. He came to guide us in our spiritual journey, and to help us embrace our own enlightenment and cosmic consciousness.

So Jesus is usually seen as just another avatar (an incarnation of deity). In Hinduism avatars are descents of Vishnu, one of the principal deities. In generic Eastern and New Age thought there are numerous avatars such as Krishna, the Buddha, etc. There is nothing special or unique about Jesus: he is just one of many who have achieved cosmic consciousness and have come to help us do the same.

Traditional biblical understandings of who Jesus is and why he came to earth are denied or radically twisted to fit into the Eastern worldview. The uniqueness of Christ is downplayed, and he is seen as just another “ascended master” or one who has already found moksha.

As I mentioned in my piece on the NAM and Christianity, Gnosticism is a big part of this. This early, heretical movement offered salvation by way of arcane knowledge (gnosis). One achieves salvation by acquiring knowledge of secret and hidden truths. Usually only an elite few gain such special knowledge and insight.

In Christianity and the Hellenistic World, Ronald Nash explains how Jesus is viewed in such a scheme: “The Gnostic Jesus was not a Savior; he was a revealer. He came for the express purpose of communicating his secret gnosis.” We are not sinners in need of salvation – we are ignorant people who need to realise that we are already divine.

Claims are also made about various “lost gospels” or “Gnostic gospels” which are said to contain the “real” truth about Jesus and his Eastern connections. Thus things like the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Phillip, and other writings are often appealed to. One common belief about Jesus in the new spiritualities and the NAM has to do with the so-called ‘lost years’ of Jesus. The Bible gives us some information about the first twelve or so years of Jesus’ life, and of course the last three or so. But it does not give us any specific information of what Jesus did between these two periods.

So a common theme that is run with is to say that Jesus actually went to the East, studied under various gurus, and eventually found enlightenment. I believed this myself back in my hippy days. But there is of course no historical basis for this, and certainly no biblical basis for this.
But let me finish by looking more closely at the claim that Jesus was just another guru. Many of the books that I list below do a great job of discussing this. One can especially highlight the 1996 volume by Groothuis, or the 2012 Zacharias book.

But let me here run with some helpful remarks found in the 1994 volume by Peter Kreeft and Ronald Tacelli, Handbook of Christian Apologetics. In their chapter on the divinity of Jesus, they have such a very useful discussion on this matter that it is worth quoting from at length.

They discuss the possibility that Jesus was really a guru, who meant his words to be taken figuratively and mystically: yes, he is divine, but so are all of us – we just don’t realise it yet! They ask why Jesus could NOT fit into such a scheme:

For one very simple reason: because he was a Jew. No guru was ever a Jew and no Jew was ever a guru. The differences – more, the contradictions – between the religious Judaism of Jesus and the teaching of all the gurus, Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist or New Age, are so many, so great and so obvious that you have to be a dunce or a professor to miss them….

If Jesus was in fact a guru or mystic who transcended and contradicted his Jewishness, then he utterly failed to get any one of the gurus’ teachings across to anybody, ever, for almost two thousand years. He was the worst teacher in history if he misled all his followers on every one of the following essential points where Judaism and Eastern mysticism conflict. The Jews were extremely proud of these distinctive beliefs and held to them tenaciously against worldwide disagreement, against the whole pagan, polytheistic, pantheistic, mythical and mystical religious world of antiquity for nearly two millennia. Here are eight flat-out contradictions between Jesus’ Judaism and the universal teaching of all gurus. Together they make it utterly impossible to call Jesus a guru.
  1. Judaism is an exoteric (public) religion of collective observance of a public law (Torah) and belief in a public book (the Scriptures). But the gurus and mystics of all cultures teach an esoteric (private), individual, inner experience that cannot be communicated in words.
  2. The Eastern mystics or gurus believe in a pantheistic, immanent God. For them, “enlightenment” consists in the realization that we and everything else are all, ultimately, God. As the Upanishads, the holy books of Hinduism, say: “The idea `one’ is the source of all truth; the idea `two’ is the source of all error.” Judaism’s distinctive doctrine of God is that God is distinct from the world. He created it out of nothing. There is an infinite gap between Creator and creature. To confuse or identify a creature with the Creator is idolatry, a terrible sin. The belief in the transcendence of God clearly distinguishes Judaism from the mystical religions, and Jesus from the gurus. If a Hindu announced to his guru, “I just discovered that I am God,” the response would be: “Congratulations. You finally found out.” If a Jew had said that 2000 years ago, the response would have been stoning (In 8:3159) or crucifixion (Jn 19:1-7).
  3. For Jews, God is a person. The supreme revelation of God was to Moses in the burning bush when he told Moses his own true eternal name: “I Am.” For Jews “I” is the name of Ultimate Reality-God. For the gurus, “I” is the name of ultimate illusion. Individuality, personality, selfhood is the supreme illusion which must be seen through and dispelled if we are to attain the supreme truth of enlightenment. Far from being the nature of ultimate reality in God, it is not even real in us.
  4. For the mystics, time and history are also ultimately unreal, illusory, projections of unenlightened consciousness. Enlightenment consists of emancipation from time. Salvation is found in timelessness. . . . But for the Jews, time and matter (which are relative to each other) are real because God created them. So we have eight flat-out contradictions, all of them crucially important, between the teaching of Jesus as we have it in the New Testament and the teaching of the Eastern mystics and gurus. To classify Jesus as a guru is as accurate as classifying Marx as a capitalist.

Jesus in an Age of Controversy by Groothuis, Douglas R. (Author) I conclude with the closing paragraphs of Stolen Identity by Peter Jones:
The uniqueness of Jesus is surely (1) the earthshaking claim of Immanuel, God come in human form, added to (2) the declaration of the definitive forgiveness of sins and the defeat of evil, and (3) completed by the proclamation of the physical resurrection of Jesus, the final defeat of death, and the coming transformed cosmos. . . . In the cross of Jesus, the human problem of sin is resolved. In the resurrection of Jesus, the human inevitability of death is vanquished. In this gospel, God is with us. No other religion has ever made such a claim.

In the debate about the identity of Jesus, and the argument regarding the version we can trust, the stakes are enormous. There is no neutral position. You must choose. Is he “the divine/human Savior of the world” or a spiritual guru like many others? Is he a source of timeless wisdom of the bringer of the gospel news? I have chosen the biblical Jesus because I sense a deep need, not for a coach or religious technical advisor, but for a righteous and fully trustworthy Savior, who as my Creator and Redeemer does things for me I could never do for myself.

​Matt18:12/Luke15:4-from these passages we -understand- it is -Jesus- who leaves the 99. This is because he used short relatable stories to share deeper spiritual insights about Himself, His Father, and His Kingdom. The lost sheep parables are no different and point to considerable truths. To better understand these truths, we’ll need to take a closer look at the nature of parables and what is implied by the stories of the lost sheep. In Luke, the lost sheep, loving shepherd, and remaining flock, spoke so brilliantly and effectively to their respective situations. And they did so because the familiar points of reference added depth to what Jesus was trying to relay. Today, it’s a bit harder to relate to this culture of ancient Israel, so it helps to read these #parables with a little #context. For instance, Psalm 100:3 is one of many places where -God’s people- are referred to as sheep. It says, “Know that the Lord is God… we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.” This theme of believers of Jesus, or Christians, being sheep is repeated all throughout (Matt10:6; Mark14:27; Isaiah53:6; Jer50:6), used again in both parables, among other places. These parables combined speak to the complete body of Christ. To the sheep who are already in the fold, and to the sheep who are yet to come. Both to the lost sinner, and again to the found saint. Most predominantly, we recognize this in the life of the “lost” sinner, “Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” (Luke15:4). While we were sinners, Christ died for us, (Romans 5:8) thus securing an eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12) and tearing the *curtain between us and God (Hebrews10:20) that from -His fullness- we can *receive #grace upon grace (John 1:16). The Shepherd goes after the sheep who are his(Matt18:12; Luke 15:4; 2 Timothy 2:19) amid the goats and the wolves(Matt25:33; Matt7:15). It is His sheep that hear and recognize their Shepherd’s voice (John 10:27), for they have been #chosen and #predestined to do so (Eph 1:4-5).

The frequency of dense New Testament streaks in the Old Testament, especially in Leviticus and Deuteronomy; I didn’t expect to see them there.

While reading a litany of cross-references called out in the Geisler and Nix book, it occurred to me that it would be helpful if we could somehow visualize the direct citations, and thereby visualize the case for plenary (or full) inspiration.  After all, it’s one thing to read about Adam and Eve in Genesis, and it’s entirely something else for Jesus to refer to Adam and Eve in a non-allegorical context.  Or maybe not (it depends on your initial understanding and belief).

According to data available from Crossway Bibles, there are 599 direct citations between verses in the Bible.  If you add word-or-phrase, thematic, and less-direct references, there are over 115,000 cross references that have been mapped by Crossway.  To graphically illustrate these cross references, we can borrow a genome mapping tool from our Canadian friends working in the field of genetics.

The above illustration is a non-genomic map of all 599 direct citations in the Bible.  If you spend a little time studying the map, it highlights and supports  some very interesting observations and conclusions.

The connecting bands represent ‘bridges’ where one book cites another.  The width of the bands is indicative of the number of citations between the two books.  The colors of the bands are meaningless, except to distinguish one connecting band from another.

The INNER ring is color-coded by writer (Paul is orange, Luke is lavender, Psalmists are red, Moses is brown, Peter and Mark are plum, John is blue, the writer of Hebrews is chartreuse, Isaiah is olive).  Numbers on the inner ring are the number of verses containing direct citations.  For example, Isaiah has over 130 direct citations from other books, and Psalms has over 180.

The OUTER ring represents percentages of connected verses within that book.  For example approximately 30 percent of the citations of Psalms appear in Hebrews.

The most influential/influenced Scriptures (the biggest wedges) were Psalms, Isaiah, Romans, Hebrews, Matthew, and Acts—accounting for half of the direct citations in the Bible.
Matthew is more grounded in the Old Testament than the other three Gospel writers.  (Isn’t it argued that Matthew’s text was written originally in Hebrew?)

Paul in Romans,  Acts (some of which is Paul), and the writer of Hebrews have the lion’s share of the New Testament citations.
Paul cites 13 different Old Testament books in Romans alone.

Genesis gets surprisingly little attention outside of Romans.

Job, which is arguably older than Genesis, gets even less recognition (in terms of direct citations anyway).

Peter apparently wasn’t very well read, as may also be apparent in Mark with so few Old Testament citations. (Mark was thought to be Peter’s secretary, so the Gospel of Mark is actually Peter’s source material.)

Revelation has almost no direct citations.  It cannot be surprising that no other books cite Revelation (Revelation was the last book written), but is interesting that the content of Revelation is full of direct dictation from Jesus and John’s apocalyptic vision(s).  In a graphical sense this reminds us that very few first-century Christians would have had their understanding of heaven based upon Revelation, and that Revelation is truly unique—and a gift to later disciples.

The Gospels are generally lacking in citations of each other—could this be an indication of their contemporary authorship (i.e. that they were written at about the same time).

Ultimately, what we best might take away from this map is an appreciation for how tightly all of the Scriptures fit together, thereby supporting the case for the plenary inspiration of the Scriptures—in graphical form no less.

A clear example of this comes at the end of Luke's gospel. After Jesus was crucified, his followers were crushed. They had hoped that he would be the Messiah who would destroy the tyranny of Rome and restore the kingdom of Israel. But their idea of the Messiah was not God’s idea. To his disappointed followers, Jesus said:

“‘How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?’ And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:25-27 NIV)

For Jesus, the idea that he had to first die as an atonement for our sins, and then rise from the dead, made perfect sense—and was, in fact, necessary—as the fulfillment of what the prophets of the Hebrew Bible had said. This was how he understood himself, and he argued that this was the only way his followers could understand him.

But what does it mean to fulfill the Scriptures? This is not as simple as it may sound. Often, the New Testament writers say that Jesus has fulfilled the Scriptures when something in his life is literally predicted by the prophets. For instance, the idea that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Other times, fulfillment is not about prediction but pattern. In his role as Israel's Messiah, Jesus fulfills the Scriptures when he relives Israel's story through his own life—when he suffers their pains, endures their hardships, and lives a life of perfect obedience to God's law.

So, we invite you to explore these passages below from the Jewish Scriptures and their fulfillments in the life of Jesus.

The Prophecies
1) The Messiah would be resurrected

Hebrew Scriptures reference: Psalm 16:8-11

New Testament citations: Acts 13:35-37

Commentary: King David may have seen ahead to his own resurrection—but David’s resurrection was only possible because of the resurrection of his descendant, the Messiah. His vision of his own resurrection and that of the Messiah’s could well have blended into one glimpse of the future.

In rabbinic tradition, there was discussion as to whether David was speaking of immortality in Psalm 16.1 The psalm expresses King David’s hope, but what was he hoping for? Was it for a long and full life in the present – or was it for immortality and to be in God’s presence forever? David affirms that God will not “abandon my soul to Sheol,” implying that God would not leave him to the grave. And his affirmation that God would “not let your holy one see corruption” (“corruption” is literally, “the Pit”) implies that he believed he would not undergo the physical decay that death involves.

A popular Jewish song goes like this: “David, Melech Yisrael, chai, chai, v’kayam,” “David, King of Israel, lives forever” (or “lives and endures”). An online poster (using an alternative spelling for David) posed this question to a Jewish discussion group: “I’m pretty sure David, the king of Israel is dead and buried. If so, what does this song really mean and why do we sing it?” One answer given was: “Perhaps since the messiah is to be from the lineage of King David and has yet to come it is a reference of things to come via King David’s line and a continuation?”

✨In the New Testament book of ACTS, chapter two, PETER uses a similar thought in addressing Jewish people on the holiday of SHAVOUT, the day on which, according to *tradition, King David was both BORN and also DIED. No wonder he takes the occasion to quote Psalm 16 and then mentions that “David is dead and his tomb is available for INSPECTION!” ✨But, he continues,

“Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an OATH to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he FORESAW and SPOKE about the resurrection of the [Messiah], that he was not *abandoned* to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are WITNESSES.”

– ACTS 2:30-32

King David may have seen ahead to his own resurrection – but David’s resurrection was only possible because of the resurrection of his descendant, the Messiah. His VISION of his own resurrection and that of the Messiah’s could well have blended into one glimpse of the future.

In Acts chapter 13, Paul argues similarly. David did see (that is, EXPERIENCE) that corruption of death, because, after all, he died. But it was in his own descendant, the Messiah Jesus, that corruption was “Not seen.” As Paul taught elsewhere, because of Jesus’ resurrection, the resurrection of all other believers is possible.

David looked ahead to a life with God beyond the grave, even if he did not have full CLARITY of what that entailed. Because Jesus’ resurrection enables the resurrection of all believers, including David, that vision of his own resurrection merged with the resurrection of Jesus. (Reference: Psalm 16:8-11

How Can I Identify Messianic Prophecies in the Old Testament?

There are prophetic types and shadows all throughout the Old Testament pointing to Jesus Christ. From the tabernacle and the feasts to the offerings and the High Priest, we can identify the Messiah who was, and is and is to come.

There are more than 300 Old Testament prophecies fulfilled by Jesus Christ, *revealing* the TRUE Messiah who would come to ATONE for sin and to REDEEM BOTH *Jew and *Gentile unto Himself.

In order for Christians to identify Messianic prophecies and prophetic types and shadows within the Old Testament, it is important to be a student of THE WORD of God and to understand that the New Testament is needed to UNDERSTAND the Old Testament and vice versa.

Both the Old Testament and the New Testament testify of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament predicts the One to come. The New Testament reveals the One who has come and will come again.

You may be familiar with the account in Luke 24 where Cleopas and another disciple are walking along the road to Emmaus following the *death, *burial, and *resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As they walked along, Jesus DREW NEAR and began ASKING them QUESTIONS about THEIR CONVERSATION.  

Unable to *recognize *Jesus, they told of what had happened and of their languishing hope that He was the one to redeem Israel.

Jesus 👏🏻rebuked👏🏻 them saying, “How foolish you are, and how -slow to believe- all that the prophets have SPOKEN! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” (Luke 24:25,26).

He then went on to INTERPRET to them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself, beginning with *Moses and all the Prophets* (Luke 24:27).

These passages along with countless others in the New Testament are *interwoven* with Old Testament prophecies and types, clearly IDENTIFYING Jesus Christ as the Messiah who was FORETOLD hundreds of “years before” His birth.

According to Walter Kaiser, “There is no finer TEACHER🍎 on whether Jesus is to be found in the Old Testament than the teaching of our LORD Jesus HIMSELF.” 

Along with Luke 24, we find Jesus saying to the crowd in the Sermon on the Mount, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the LAW or the PROPHETS; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (✨Matthew 5:17✨). 

He also 👏🏻REBUKED👏🏻 the Jewish people in John 5:39 saying, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you THINK that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that TESTIFY about ME.” Something worth noting here is that the scriptures Jesus referenced were from the Old Testament.

🌳🌈The Partnership of the Testaments🌈🌳

Identifying Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament requires “reading and understanding the New Testament.”

For instance, by *studying and *understanding the earthly life and ministry of Jesus Christ, we can *recognize the scriptures that *foretold of Him in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament ✨PARTNER TOGETHER✨ to Jesus Christ. 🌈

Details surrounding the life and ministry of Christ Jesus and Old Testament prophecy become evident when reading the New Testament. Matthew 1:22-23 quotes the prophet Isaiah concerning the virgin birth of Christ (Isaiah 7:14).

Jeremiah 31:22 foretells of Him being conceived by the Holy Spirit, and this is fulfilled in Matthew 1:20 and Luke 1:35. The place of Christ’s birth as Bethlehem is noted in two of the gospels with it first prophesied in Micah 5:1-5.

Details surrounding His ministry, such as the BLIND SEEING🙈and the DEAF HEARING🙉 (MATTHEW 11:5) were prophesied by the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 29:18,19; Isaiah 35:5).

Psalm 78:2 says, “I will open my mouth with a parable; I will UTTER HIDDEN, things from “of old.” We know from the New Testament that Jesus spoke many times in PARABLES (Matthew 13:34-35:34). 🌳🍎

The Old Testament speaks of JUDAS who would FULFILL prophecy in betraying Christ for 30 pieces of silver (Psalm 41:9; Zechariah 11:12,13).

Several of the Psalms mention the piercing of a righteous SUFFERERS hands and feet (Psalm 22:16), soldiers casting lots for this same individual’s coat (Psalm 22:18), this One having no bones broken (Psalm 34:20), and His resurrection (Psalm 49:15).

✨Even the CRY of Jesus Christ from the CROSS, “My God, My God, why have you FORSAKEN me?” would have brought this Psalm to the crowd’s REMEMBERABCE, recognizing its SOURCE from the Old Testament. Jesus Christ was THE ONE in Psalm 22.✨

-From Genesis to Malachi-

In the “very BEGINNING” of the Old Testament, we find the “FIRST prophecy recorded” in the “GARDEN after the FALL,” 🌳🍎which would tell of the “Seed from a woman” who would crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15).

All throughout the Old Testament, Messianic prophecies can be found *pointing* to Jesus Christ. According to Walter Kaiser, there are at least six direct Messianic predictions in the Pentateuch: Genesis 3:15; 9:27; 12:2-3; 49:8-12, Numbers 24:15-19, and Deuteronomy 18:15-18.

The One to come would defeat Satan, DWELL with HIS PEOPLE, and BLESS the nations of the earth through Abraham’s seed, which would come through JUDAH. He would be a STAR to come out of JACOB and a scepter to RISE out of Israel, and He would be a PROPHET.

The scriptures TELL US that the throne of David would be established forever, and this is prophesied in 2 Samuel 7:12,13, 1 Chronicles 17:11-14, and 2 Chronicles 21:7.

The promised REDEEMER is mentioned in JOB 19:25-27. A “priest like Melchizedek” is noted in Psalm 110:1-7. Proverbs 30:4 DECLARES the Son of God.

The *prophets* of the Old Testament foretold of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Isaiah PROCLAIMED more prophecies concerning Christ than anyone, particularly the well-known verses in Isaiah 53.

A description of the New COVENANT brought forth by Christ is described in Jeremiah 31:31-34. Ezekiel 34:23 says, “I will place over them one SHEPARD, my SERVANT DAVID, and he will “tend to” them; he will tend to them and be their shepherd.” 🐏👏🏻

This is referring to the MESSIAH, the 👏🏻GOOD SHEPARD.👏🏻 Daniel SPEAKS of His everlasting Kingdom (Daniel 7:13,14). 🐏👏🏻

As we continue on with the minor *prophets, we see Messianic *prophecies of Israel’s RESTORATION (Hosea 3:5), the PROMISE of the Holy SPIRIT (Joel 2:28-32), the establishment of the KINGDOM (Micah 4:1-8), the LAMB on the throne (Zechariah 2:10-13), a heavenly High Priest (Zechariah 6:12,13), and the “light of the world” (Malachi 4:2,3). ☀️

These are but a fraction of the Old Testament prophecies proclaiming the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and these prophecies are fulfilled through Jesus Christ and found within the gospels, Romans, Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation.

The early church held the RESPONSIBILITY of showing how the Old Testament prophecies *pointed to Jesus and that He came into the world as the Son of DAVID, “a title closely linked with the MESSIAH as a royal person.”

The early church would rely on the Old Testament to minister the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ and to TESTIFY of Him.

What Does This Mean?

There are PROPHETIC TYPES and shadows all throughout the Old Testament *pointing to Jesus Christ. From the “tabernacle and the feasts” to the offerings and the High Priest, we can IDENTIFY the Messiah who was, and is and is TO COME. 

The importance of staying in the WORD of God, understanding the New Testament and its *harmony with the Old Testament, -cannot- be overemphasized. 

To understand one is to understand the other, and they both TESTIFY of Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

*HEROISM AND HOPE*

“I like the fact that Israel emphasises the heroism that often gets forgotten in tales of the Holocaust. The end of the official ceremony also involves the singing of Israel’s national anthem, “Ha Tikva”, which means “The HOPE”. The people of Israel were brutally decimated, but not destroyed. They continue to live, to grow, and be a blessing to the world in many different ways – Israel is constantly offering new technology, agricultural developments, and medical breakthroughs that bless to the nations. As we are coming up to Israel’s Independence Day in a couple of weeks, another big reason for the difference in timing becomes apparent. The country of Israel was reborn out of the ashes of the Holocaust, and it is good to be aware of the connection. And since God has restored his people to their land like dry bones coming back to life, the number of Jewish people who have also received the breath of God, his Spirit, continues to grow. There is HOPE. God is faithful to his people Israel.” ❤️☀️❤️☺️

The explanation known as Copenhagen interpretation and the *phenomenon* known as quantum *entanglement* also belong-to the quantum mechanics.

​#agape [God is love] Christ translates into agape ❤️. 3/4 tesitmonies of Christ describe his attributes and virtues. The gospels of Mark, Mathew and Luke testify to what this means for Jesus' following, that is to model his attributes and virtues through his example, teachings and underlying, all encompassing message: Agape Love. Following yeshua is to follow what he fully represents, which is love (though we all fall short). Agape love is the ultimate, it's unconditional, limitless, boundless, timeless, #steadfast, all merciful, all #inclusive, all accepting, all forgiving, undying and sacraficial. Jesus #restores the suffering, the outcasts, the marginalized,  the poor, the hurting, and the excluded and explains the availability of Gods light☀️, hope🙏, peace 🕊️, and love. This love is NOT exclusive or under any conditions, its a love of all realms, all times, all people, all races, all nations, all sins and transgressions, all creeds, all religions, ALL of humanity. It is universal oneness. Jesus' last message before his death was the sermon on the mount⛰️ (Matthew 5, 6:9-13) which encompasses much of what his life teachings conveys; love your neighbor and enemy as yourself. God is love and Anyone who strives to live in this kind of ❤️ and💡lives -in- Jesus and "serves his kingdom(humanity)"on earth regardless of what human "vessel" we use. Its about bringing forth this love among all people on earth. The spirit of humanity is the spirit of love, love is not replacable but #fulfillable🌈. The final testimony describes his identity (yahweh reveals "I Am" to Moses, (exodus 3) in same revelation so does yesua to John.. I am the way, the light, the one who sent me, the Alpha omega, the begining and end (#John14:6, John 8:12, 15:1) Not only is God eternal, but he's available and accessible, he heals and #redeems on earth through christ, I can Truly, objectively and personally #testify to this, which is why these tangible encounters with Jesus sincerely drives myself and others to testify such #truth, to share in this #gift). 🙌
